BENIN CITY — A unique art initiative is sparking discussions among Nigerian youths about population growth, climate action, and cultural transformation.
The Traveling CartoonAfrica SDG Cartoon Campaign, held at Jatto Memorial Christian College in Benin City encouraged students to critically examine societal norms, particularly the long-standing tradition of large African families.
During the event, organized as part of the school’s Culture Day 2025 celebrations, students expressed concerns about the economic and social impact of overpopulation.
They argued that having too many family members competing for limited resources leads to hunger, poverty, and conflicts.
Through creative expressions, including cartoons, poetry, spoken word, and short stories, the students advocated for a shift in cultural perspectives, promoting environmental protection, health, and sustainable living.
The campaign is spearheaded by Beautiful Feet International (BFI) Ministry, in collaboration with African Press Cartoon, Francodus Art Foundation, and other partners.
It is a strategic component of the Cartoon Africa International Biennial (CAIB) festival, now in its seventh edition, which uses graphic humor and visual storytelling to educate and raise awareness about critical development issues in Africa.
With a goal of engaging at least 1,000 African youths, the initiative aims to equip young talents with creative skills that can be monetized, helping to reduce youth unemployment while contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
