Benin City – The Edo State Ministry of Environment and Sustainability has commenced an on-site assessment of Ekundayo Street in Ekae, off Sapele Road, Benin City following complaints from residents about persistent flooding in the area.
The Permanent Secretary, Environment and Sustainability, Mr Jude Ekpo, confirmed on Thursday that a team had been dispatched to carry out a physical evaluation.
The purpose of the visit is to gather information on immediate areas requiring intervention.
Residents had earlier raised concerns about the impact of the flooding on their daily lives, noting that the issue has led to significant displacement.
“Many landlords and tenants have relocated due to the situation,” said Mr Paul Obeahon, a resident of the area.
He stated that the flooding had negatively affected both human and vehicular movement on the street.
Another resident, Madam Isabella Awani, described a recent incident where a child was nearly caught in the floodwaters before being rescued by bystanders.
Similarly, Engr Godfrey Adima noted that students and professionals have moved out of the area due to the difficulty of accessing the street during rainfall.
He added that the construction of a proper drainage system and water collection points would address the problem and restore access to the area.
The Ministry’s assessment is expected to inform further government response and possible infrastructural works, it was reliably gathered.
