After enduring years of neglect and recent devastation caused by a failed dam, the Ekeke-Erah community in Owan East Local Government Area have finally received a lifeline from the Edo State Government.
The intervention, led by the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA), underscores the administration’s commitment to disaster relief and community rehabilitation.
The collapse of the dam had severely impacted farmlands, markets, and crucial infrastructure, including the bridge that connects Ekeke-Erah to other parts of the state.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, it was gathered that Governor Monday Okpebholo directed immediate relief efforts to support affected residents.
Hon. Jerry Idahosa, Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA who personally delivered the relief materials reassured the community of the government’s dedication to their recovery.
“We are here on the directive of His Excellency, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, to bring you relief. These materials have been handed over to the community leadership, and I assure you that your concerns will be presented to the Governor, who is a proactive and listening leader.”
Beyond emergency relief, Hon. Idahosa highlighted the government’s broader disaster response strategy.
He urged residents to utilise the toll-free EdoSEMA emergency hotline (739) for prompt reporting of disasters, emphasising that swift action can mitigate the impact of future emergencies.
“Many people do not know about this service. It is free and allows us to escalate emergency cases to the appropriate agencies for immediate response,” he explained.
To further support the recovery process, additional relief items, including sugar and mosquito nets, will soon be delivered to address water pollution concerns and prevent mosquito-borne diseases.
The government is also actively considering the community’s request for a healthcare facility, recognising the critical need for accessible medical services.
The intervention has sparked renewed calls for long-term development in Ekeke-Erah. Hon. Fred Enaikhe, Leader of Owan East Assembly, described the relief effort as a landmark moment for the community.
“For over two decades, we have suffered in silence, receiving no support. But today, the Governor has shown that he truly cares. This is a turning point for our people.”
While appreciating the relief effort, Comrade Morude Innocent, a community representative, stressed the need for sustainable development.
“We are grateful for this intervention, but our community needs more than just relief materials.
“We need proper infrastructure, security, healthcare, and economic empowerment for our youth,” he stated.
The Edo State Government’s response has ignited hope among the people of Ekeke-Erah, signalling the possibility of long-overdue infrastructural development.
