A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer has been confirmed dead following an ambush by suspected militants in the Igbomotoru community, located in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

According to local sources, the NSCDC team was returning from an operation targeting illegal bunkering activities in the area when they were attacked on Friday. The assailants, believed to be armed militants, reportedly opened fire on the operatives, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

During the confrontation, the deceased officer was said to have been shot at close range. The attackers, who were heavily armed with high-calibre weapons, allegedly overpowered the security team.

Several other operatives sustained injuries in the attack and have since been evacuated to a medical facility in Yenagoa for treatment.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Solomon Ogbere, confirmed awareness of the incident but noted that a full report had yet to be received.

“The information, sincerely speaking, we’ve gotten it, but I’m still waiting for the OC to give me a comprehensive report. You’re not far from the truth, but I can’t speak definitively yet because I haven’t received all the details,” Ogbere stated.
