The Edo chapter of the Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria (ATOPCON) has described the planned reconstruction of the 125-kilometre Benin–Asaba expressway project as a crucial step towards regional development.
It is expected to drive economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance connectivity across Edo State.
This was contained in a statement congratulating the Federal and Edo State governments on the initiative,
The statement, signed by ATOPCON, Edo State Chairman, George Osagiede, highlighted the road’s potential to create jobs, improve mobility, attract investment, and reduce travel time.
“Passing through the Ikpoba-Okha, Uhunmwode, and Orhionmwon local government areas, the upgraded expressway is expected to improve road safety and stimulate economic activities in the region,” the statement said.
ATOPCON also urged the Edo State government and local councils to establish planning authorities to oversee orderly development.
The association stressed that structured urban planning would help address issues, such as poverty, poor living standards, inadequate social amenities, and limited access to education and employment.
The group further emphasised the importance of implementing the Benin City Master Plan and the Edo State Regional Development Plan (2023–2053).
It called for the involvement of qualified town planners to ensure sustainable urban growth and coordinated development across the state.
