Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, has called on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to refrain from politicising the tragic killing of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area. He emphasised that Governor Monday Okpebholo remains committed to peace, unity, and security in the state and has taken swift action to address the situation.
In a statement issued in Benin City, Ohonbamu reaffirmed the Governor’s strong condemnation of the senseless violence, describing it as an unacceptable act of inhumanity.
He stated that the Governor immediately directed security agencies to track down those responsible and ensure justice is served.
“Upon receiving news of the incident at night, Governor Okpebholo promptly traveled from Abuja to Uromi the following morning, engaging security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book,” Ohonbamu stated.
“Furthermore, he visited Kano, where the victims hailed from, meeting with the Governor and grieving families to express solidarity.
“This is a moment that tests leadership, and Governor Okpebholo has demonstrated his commitment.”
Ohonbamu criticised Chris Nehikhare, Publicity Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee, for attempting to use the incident as a tool for political attacks. He described PDP’s claims about a deteriorating security situation as misleading and unfair, given the immediate and decisive actions taken by the current administration.
“The Governor did not hesitate to suspend the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP. Friday Ibadin (Rtd), to allow for a thorough investigation,” he added. “This underscores the Governor’s determination to strengthen security mechanisms rather than indulge in baseless political distractions.”
He further highlighted the Governor’s proactive steps in overhauling Edo’s security framework, including the procurement of new vehicles and motorcycles for security agencies, a move unprecedented in previous administrations.
“Unlike the PDP’s eight-year tenure, where security votes were mismanaged and insecurity was rampant, Governor Okpebholo has prioritised the safety of Edo citizens. It is hypocritical for the PDP, which failed to safeguard lives when in power, to now claim to be security advocates,” Ohonbamu remarked.
He concluded by urging the PDP to refrain from using tragic incidents for political gain and instead support efforts to ensure a safer Edo State. “The insecurity we face today is a result of PDP’s past failures. Rather than attempt to rewrite history, they should acknowledge their shortcomings and allow the present administration to deliver on its promises of security and good governance.”
