Six police officers attached to the Edo State Command have been arrested for allegedly extorting motorists along the Benin bypass.
According to a statement posted on the official X account of the Nigeria Police Force, the arrests align with the Force’s zero-tolerance policy on extortion and unprofessional conduct.
The officers, along with their supervising officer, a Chief Superintendent of Police, have reported to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they were presented before the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
The IGP reportedly described their conduct as disgraceful, unacceptable, and disappointing, and has directed immediate disciplinary action.
“The officers have been queried, and orderly room trials have commenced for the Inspectors identified in the viral video,” the statement noted.
The Force reiterated its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability, assuring the public that misconduct will not be tolerated.
The alleged misconduct was exposed through a video posted by a user on X, which appeared to show the officers engaging in unprofessional behaviour.
