In a heartwarming act of generosity and homecoming, Nigerian-born American basketball player Oswin Erhunmwunse returned to his former school, University Preparatory Secondary School (UPSS) in Benin City, with a powerful message of hope, gratitude, and inspiration.

Erhunmwunse, who currently plays for Providence College in the United States, made a significant donation of N1 million to UPSS to support the school’s ongoing development projects.

His return was marked by a grand reception, featuring music, a colourful procession, and heartfelt cheers from students, teachers, and alumni.

The event, attended by members of his family including his parents Pastor Peter and Jennifer Erhunmwunse, brother Theodore, and other relatives, was a deeply emotional reunion.

Oswin shared memories of his days at UPSS and reflected on how the school helped shape his journey from local classrooms to international basketball courts.

Speaking to journalists, he explained the purpose of his visit: to reconnect with his roots, encourage students to chase their dreams, and give back to the institution that nurtured him.

“I came to see how the school has grown and to remind these students that with hard work, faith, and strong mentorship, they can achieve anything,” he said.

In addition to his financial support, Erhunmwunse gifted the school’s basketball team with new basketballs and kits.

He also presented a special honorary plaque to the school’s proprietress, Juliet Urevbu, in recognition of her steadfast support during his formative years.

A visibly moved Urevbu praised Oswin’s humility and prayed for his continued success, noting that his story would serve as a beacon of hope for the students.

“His return today has planted a seed of ambition in many young hearts,” she said.

Earlier, in a significant gesture of cultural and royal recognition, the Crown Prince of Benin, His Royal Highness Ezelekhae Ewuare II, the Edaiken N’ Uselu, received Erhunmwunse in a private audience.

During their meeting, the prince presented him with a Royal Bronze Head, symbolising honour and encouragement.

HRH Ewuare II commended Oswin’s accomplishments and urged him to maintain his focus and discipline.

He expressed hopes of watching him play in the NBA someday, promising to attend one of his games once he breaks into the league. “I am proud of you,” the prince declared.

“You carry the hopes of many young people in this kingdom. Keep going forward.”

Erhunmwunse’s visit not only marked a return to his roots but also served as a reminder of the powerful impact that one determined individual can have on a community. His story, now etched into the halls of UPSS, will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of stars
