The Director-General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency, Dr Loretta Ogboro-Okor, has stated that Edo State contributes an estimated 31 per cent of Nigeria’s total diaspora remittances, underscoring the state’s substantial role in the country’s economic development.

Speaking in a telephone interview with newsmen, Ogboro-Okor explained that out of the approximately 17 million Nigerians living in the diaspora, a significant number originate from Edo State.

“Edo has played a critical role in diaspora contributions since 2017, when the World Bank reported that Nigeria received $22 billion in total remittances. Of that amount, $6 billion came from Edo State,” she said.

“By 2024, the total remittances to Nigeria had increased to $24 billion, and Edo’s contribution was projected at $7 billion. That amounts to a remarkable 31 per cent of the national total.”

She attributed this achievement to the resilience, hard work, and strong sense of community among Edo indigenes abroad.

According to her, these traits are rooted in the state’s deep-seated family values and communal solidarity.

“The money they remit is transforming lives, uplifting families, and driving sustainable development in communities across Edo State,” she added.

Dr Ogboro-Okor also highlighted the agency’s ongoing international outreach and engagement efforts.

These include harmonization and awareness campaigns held in Rome, Verona, and Napoli, designed to deepen collaboration with the Edo diaspora and strengthen their involvement in state development initiatives.

She particularly commended Edo citizens living in Italy for their consistent financial support, noting that their contributions have not only fortified the state’s economy but have also enhanced Nigeria’s global reputation.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, she noted, is proud of the impact being made by the Edo diaspora and remains committed to working closely with them to ensure their continued relevance and welfare.

She called on Edo indigenes and their partners abroad to sustain their support for the state’s development initiatives, assuring them that the present administration is steadfast in its commitment to the welfare of its citizens at home and abroad.
