The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Abdullahi Yahya, has reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to driving electoral reforms through strategic collaboration with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), leveraging the union’s nationwide media structure.
He disclosed this at the NUJ National Secretariat in Abuja where he received the leadership of two prominent Civil Society Organisations who paid him a courtesy visit.
The visit, held in a spirit of solidarity and shared democratic purpose, was aimed at consolidating the existing partnership between the NUJ and CSOs, while also identifying new areas of joint advocacy, particularly within the crucial area of electoral reforms
Comrade Yahya expressed appreciation for the visit and pledged that the NUJ would fully support and collaborate with the Civil Society Organisations.
He assured the delegation that the NUJ, with its structures across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, stands ready to serve as a formidable platform for civic mobilisation, public education, and policy advocacy on electoral matters.
“The NUJ is not only a media body; it is a critical stakeholder in the democratic space,” Yahya stated.
“We are ready to deploy our national network of journalists and media professionals to amplify the voices pushing for electoral justice and to foster a more inclusive and accountable political process.”
The NUJ President also highlighted the importance of institutional cooperation, noting that genuine reform could only be achieved through sustained advocacy, public enlightenment, and the collective will of stakeholders committed to democratic consolidation.
The CSO representatives underscored the urgency of reforming Nigeria’s electoral system and emphasised their willingness to partner with the NUJ under Comrade Yahya’s leadership to achieve these reforms.
They noted the critical role the media plays in shaping democratic processes and stressed the importance of a strong alliance with the union in promoting accountability, transparency, and civic engagement.
The highpoints of the visit included the presentation of mobilisation materials to the NUJ President and a group photograph to commemorate the engagement.
