…Urges peaceful resolution
The Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has intervened in a leadership dispute in Obagie Ne’vbosa Community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, following tensions over the controversial appointment of Mr Uyi Igiebor as Okaighele.
In a bid to restore calm and ensure due process, the government has directed the suspension of Mr Igiebor’s installation to allow for a peaceful resolution in line with established traditional procedures.
This decision was announced by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir (Dr) Lucky Eseigbe, during a fact-finding meeting held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Benin City.
The meeting followed a petition that accused certain individuals of using armed thugs disguised as vigilantes to intimidate residents and destabilise the community.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Eseigbe emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and the rule of law.
He appealed to all parties involved to embrace honesty and unity while working together to resolve the leadership dispute.
He also reassured the community of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s support for peaceful and lawful processes aimed at promoting stability across Edo State.
The Commissioner further stated that a follow-up meeting would be convened in three weeks, during which the community is expected to present its final decision on the appointment of a legitimate Okaighele, along with updates on other related matters brought before the Ministry.
The petitioner, Mr Ikpomwonsa Aigbedo, claimed that community elders had initially promised him the position of Okaighele but later reneged, prompting his appeal to the Ministry.
However, Mr Monday Omozuhionmwen, who represented the Odionwere, denied any knowledge of such a promise being made.
Several other community members expressed dissatisfaction with the current leadership, alleging that Mr Igiebor’s installation was irregular and had led to unrest and acts of violence within the community. One elder, Mr Micheal Alohan, stressed the importance of adhering to traditional processes in selecting both the Okaighele and Edion, noting that these roles are vital to ensuring peace and order.
Also speaking at the meeting, Hon. Osamede Edorodion commended the Commissioner’s diplomatic handling of the sensitive issue and extended appreciation to Governor Okpebholo for his continued efforts in developing Edo State and safeguarding peace at the grassroots level.
