BENIN CITY – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his administration’s ongoing crackdown on cult-related activities across the state, describing the initiative as a critical step towards restoring public order and ensuring the safety of residents.
This commendation was part of a six-point communiqué issued at the end of the Council’s monthly Congress held at the NUJ Secretariat in the GRA area of Benin City on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
The Congress, which recorded a large turnout of members from the 15 affiliated chapels, was also graced by the Deputy National President of the union, Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde.
In its deliberations, the Congress praised the state government’s commitment to curbing cultism, urging that the momentum be sustained to guarantee lasting peace and sanity in Edo communities.
On the seasonal environmental concerns, the union advised the state government to take proactive steps in preparing for the rainy season, particularly to mitigate the threats of flooding which have recently devastated parts of the country.
Residents in flood-prone zones were also urged to remain alert and, where necessary, consider temporary relocation to safer grounds.
The Congress acknowledged the progress of the ongoing flyover construction at Ramat Park, Ikpoba Hill, but called on the contracting firm to urgently rehabilitate nearby alternative routes to ease the movement of residents during the construction period.
The Congress expressed concerns over the activities of certain community youth leaders, known locally as Okaigheles, who reportedly impose exorbitant levies on land developers under the guise of community development .
The Congress warned that such practices could dissuade investors and frustrate the state government’s broader vision for urban expansion and infrastructural development.
In the political sphere, the union appealed to politicians in the state to embrace politics devoid of hatred and bitterness, and to instead pursue peace-driven, development-oriented engagements ahead of the upcoming electoral season.
The Congress congratulated the national leadership of the NUJ on the 70th anniversary of the union, describing the milestone as a testament to the resilience and dedication of journalists across Nigeria and therefore extended members best wishes for a fruitful and impactful anniversary celebration.
