The Anambra State Government has condemned the killing of 13 people in Ogboji community, Orumba South Local Government Area.
Gunmen reportedly stormed the area in two SUVs on Monday and opened fire during a monthly meeting, killing several people and firing shots into the air before fleeing.
In a statement on Wednesday, Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, described the attack as a “dastardly act” and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
Mefor said, “The Anambra State Government is deeply saddened by the recent killing of innocent lives at Ogboji. The government strongly condemns this dastardly act and extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
“We assure the people of Anambra and beyond that this incident was not targeted at any particular state or ethnic group. Preliminary investigations suggest the unfortunate incident may have arisen from an internal dispute.”
He called on the police to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“The government will do everything possible to ensure justice is served. We urge residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators. We remain committed to maintaining peace and security in our state,” he added.
