The Supreme Court has reserved its judgment in the appeal concerning the Edo State governorship election.

The apex court, after hearing arguments from all parties, adjourned the matter sine die, with Justice Garba Lawal stating that a date for the judgment would be communicated to those involved.

The appeal, filed by Asue Ighodalo and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), challenges the election outcome that saw Senator Monday Okpebholo declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ighodalo’s counsel, Ken Mosia, SAN, urged the Supreme Court to set aside the election result and declare Ighodalo the duly elected governor, arguing that his client secured the majority of lawful votes.

In response, INEC’s representative, Kanu Agabi, SAN, called on the court to dismiss the appeal, contending that the issues raised by Ighodalo and the PDP included claims of non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022.

Agabi maintained that it would be inconsistent for the appellants, having questioned the election’s legality, to seek to benefit from the same process.
