The Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, to halt the proposed inauguration of a caretaker committee for the state council of the union.

The resolution followed a motion raised by the Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Ibhamawu, ahead of the planned inauguration of a caretaker leadership for the Edo State chapter of the NLC.

Presenting the motion, Ibhamawu said the state’s labour movement, under the leadership of Comrade Bernard Eguakhide, had been operating harmoniously without strife.

He warned that the proposed caretaker committee could threaten peace in the state.

He further argued that any leadership change in the Edo NLC should only be considered at the expiration of the tenure of the current executive council in order to sustain peace and harmony.

During deliberations, a majority of the lawmakers spoke in support of the motion, stressing the need to put the planned leadership change on hold in the interest of industrial peace in the state.

In another development, the House announced receipt of a petition from civil society groups in Edo State urging the Assembly to investigate the resurgence of outlawed Community Development Associations (CDAs) and their alleged activities in communities.

The petition was referred to the House Committee on Public Petitions, with a directive to investigate and submit its report within three weeks.

Meanwhile, the House also passed a bill to establish the Edo State Parks and Gardens Agency into law.
