… Vows strict enforcement, 10 suspects arrested

BENIN CITY — The Edo State Police Command has pledged its full support for the state government’s ongoing crackdown on illegal revenue collection, assuring that it will collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure strict enforcement of the ban and restore public order.

The commitment was reaffirmed at a strategic meeting held at the Police Command Headquarters in Benin City, where the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, hosted top officials of the Edo State Government.

The delegation included the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr. Musa Ikhilor; Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), Otunba Oladele Bankole-Balogun; and Commander of the Edo State Special Taskforce, SP Michael Anetor.

Speaking to journalists after the closed-door session, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Moses Joel Yamu, who represented CP Agbonika, said the Police Command is fully aligned with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s directive and will ensure compliance through intensified enforcement operations.

“We commend the governor’s decisive action. The Police will lead the charge to rid Edo State of illegal revenue collectors who harass traders and commuters under false pretenses,” SP Yamu stated.

Otunba Bankole-Balogun described the illegal collection as a menace, expressing appreciation to the Police for their support.

“This illegal activity has disrupted commerce and subjected innocent citizens to extortion. We’re here to deepen our collaboration and enforce the governor’s directive to the letter,” he said.

Ten suspects recently arrested by the Edo State Special Taskforce have already been handed over to the Police for further investigation and prosecution.

The arrests, made during coordinated operations in Benin City at locations such as Ring Road, Sapele Road, Oka Market, and Upper Sakponba, signal a renewed effort to cleanse the system.

SP Michael Anetor, Commander of the Special Taskforce, vowed sustained action.

“We will not relent until all illegal revenue operators are rooted out. The era of extortion is over.”

The government had earlier dissolved several transport unions and revenue bodies accused of violating state guidelines, reverting exclusive authority for tax and levy collection to the EIRS via electronic platforms.
