BENIN CITY – The Federal Government has issued a fresh flood alert for 15 states, with Edo among those expected to experience heavy flooding before the end of September.

The alert, signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Ministry of Environment, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, warned that torrential rains could lead to disasters with the potential loss of lives, property, and livelihoods.

In Edo, the warning follows weeks of heavy downpour that have left some communities, particularly in Benin City and riverine local government areas, battling flash floods.

Residents in parts of Ikpoba-Okha, Egor, Oredo, and Orhionmwon have repeatedly complained of impassable roads and submerged houses after rain.

Reacting to the Federal Government’s alert, the Chief Executive Officer of the Edo State Flood, Erosion and Watershed Management Agency (EdoFEWMA), Architect Emmanuel Fashanu, assured that the state government was taking steps to protect residents.

“The warnings we issue are not casual remarks but critical advisories borne out of deep concern for the safety of our people,” he said.

“The government of Senator Monday Okpebholo is working tirelessly to minimise risks, but residents must also play their part by practicing responsible waste disposal and adhering to safety guidelines.”

Fashanu urged residents not to let down their guard, warning that flooding could still occur even though the peak of the rainy season had passed.

“There is nothing more important than your life,” he stressed.

“We strongly advise residents to remain indoors during downpours and avoid unfamiliar or fast-moving waters. Our duty is to keep issuing these warnings until Edo is safe for everyone, and we will not relent.”

He further appealed to residents in flood-prone communities such as Upper Mission Extension, Erediauwa, Ugbowo axis, and areas around the Ikpoba River to remain vigilant and report emergencies quickly.

EdoFEWMA also said it was strengthening early-warning systems in collaboration with local communities, and will intensify sensitization in schools, markets, and religious centres to ensure residents understand preventive measures.

Officials said the government had already embarked on desilting major drains in Benin City and was working with the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (EDSOPADEC) to provide flood control infrastructure in Orhionmwon and Ikpoba-Okha.
