BENIN CITY – The Edo Social-Cultural Development Initiative (Edo247) has expressed concern over the rising wave of insecurity across Edo State, warning that unchecked violence and crime could jeopardize peace, cripple socio-economic development and endanger the future of young people in the state.

In a strongly worded statement made available to The NIGERIAN OBSERVER in Benin City, the socio-cultural group described the security situation as “deeply troubling and unacceptable,” pointing to escalating cases of kidnappings, armed robberies, cult-related clashes, rural banditry and violent attacks which it said have left many communities in constant fear.

Edo247 stressed that when insecurity takes root, young people suffer the most because their education, employment opportunities and future aspirations are undermined.

The group noted that rural communities have become the most vulnerable, with farmers frequently attacked on their farmlands, villagers abducted by bandits, and families forced to pay ransom to secure the release of their loved ones.

It lamented that this wave of criminality has led to widespread abandonment of farms, disruption of food production, and a worsening poverty rate, while also discouraging local and external investment in agriculture and commerce.

According to Edo247, when farmers abandon their fields, when traders are robbed on highways, and when rural dwellers cannot sleep peacefully, the very foundation of Edo’s economy and social stability is threatened, and young people are left without opportunities to build their future.

Edo247 further warned that the implications of the current insecurity extend beyond daily safety concerns, as the climate of fear discourages skills development, community engagement and youth entrepreneurship.

“If our youths grow up in an environment where fear replaces hope, where violence overshadows opportunity, then the future of Edo State itself is in jeopardy,” the group declared.

The organisation called on the Edo State Government to intensify its security response by increasing funding and logistical support for security agencies, investing in modern equipment and intelligence-driven strategies, and working more closely with federal forces and community vigilantes.

It also demanded that vigilante groups be properly trained and regulated to prevent abuse, while stressing the need for traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth organisations and civil society groups to mobilise their communities to share intelligence, promote peace and actively participate in rebuilding trust.

Reaffirming its commitment to advocacy, peace-building and community development, Edo247 pledged to sustain its campaign for safety and stability in Edo State.

It insisted that “Edo deserves better, Edo people deserve to live in dignity and safety,” and that young people must be given the chance to realise their dreams in a secured and peaceful environment.

“Together, with decisive action and collective will, we can restore peace, strengthen development and secure the future of our youths,” the group added.
