BENIN CITY — Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting market women and men, recognizing their critical role in driving economic growth and development.
The declaration was made at the inauguration ceremony of Edo State Market Leaders, held at Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.
The State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, represented by the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, said the initiative aims to foster unity, peace, and progress in marketplaces across the state.
“Our vision is to build thriving marketplaces where traders can operate in an atmosphere of peace, fairness and mutual support.
“We aim to provide the necessary resources and encouragement to enable both men and women in our markets to succeed and contribute meaningfully to the economy of our state,” he said.
He noted that market leaders play a vital role in promoting unity, cooperation, and discipline among traders and emphasized that prioritizing women’s development strengthens families and builds resilient communities.
In her remarks, the Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Chief Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, lauded Mrs. Anani’s hospitality and described her as “Motherhood personified.”
She commended the state for prioritizing women’s empowerment and inaugurated market leaders from various local government areas.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomole, described market women as “teachers, caregivers and community builders.”
He noted their sacrifices sustain livelihoods and pledged the government’s support through improved healthcare, better market infrastructure and opportunities for small businesses.
The highpoint of the ceremony was the installation of Pastor Josephine Ibhaguezejele as Edo State Market Leader and the installation of “Iye-Ekis” of markets across the state.
The Iyaloja and state delegation also paid homage to the Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II, at the Palace.
