BENIN CITY – A Benin-based NGO, the Ambrose Agho Empowerment and Welfare Initiative, has urged governments and stakeholders to show greater appreciation for teachers in recognition of their vital role in nation-building.
The call was made in a statement on Sunday by the NGO’s Board Chairman, Prof. Dan Osasogie, to commemorate the 2025 World Teachers’ Day themed “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession.”
Signed by the Director of Publicity, Mr. Kevin Okunzuwa, the statement described teachers as professionals who “do more than share knowledge, they guide, inspire, and nurture learners to build values, skills, and understanding.”
“Teachers are worthy of celebration. Their contributions to societal growth and development are unquantifiable, and they deserve all the support and encouragement they can get,” Osasogie said.
He commended the year’s theme as timely, noting that the NGO’s programmes were aligned to uplift the teaching profession by empowering indigent students and promoting craftsmanship through scholarships.
According to him, the initiative also encourages young people to enrol in Colleges of Education as part of efforts by its founder, Maj. Ambrose Agho (Rtd), to strengthen the teaching profession and support educators.
He urged policymakers to treat teachers as partners in national development rather than as disposable tools.
