LAGOS: The Founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr Boniface Aniebonam, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Prof. Joash Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking on Sunday in Lagos, Aniebonam said Amupitan must restore public confidence in the commission once confirmed by the Senate.
“The first task for Amupitan is to change the battered image of INEC and return Nigerians’ trust in the umpire,” he said.
Aniebonam stated that Tinubu must have seen Amupitan’s capacity before nominating him, describing the move as part of efforts to reform governance.
He urged Amupitan to clear all pending cases of disobedience to court orders, including those affecting the NNPP’s leadership, and ensure transparency in INEC’s operations.
“It is still shocking that INEC under Mahmoud Yakubu ignored court orders on our leadership crisis and even altered the NNPP’s logo and colour without our consent,” he said.
Aniebonam assured that the NNPP would support the new INEC leadership and work with President Tinubu to strengthen democracy.
