BENIN — The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, and the Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Ize-Iyamu, on Tuesday jointly commissioned an ultra-modern police post within the hospital premises.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Ize-Iyamu said the fully equipped police post marked a major step towards strengthening security in the hospital, which serves a large population of patients, staff, students and visitors.

She stressed that a secure environment was essential for effective emergency response, uninterrupted clinical services, staff confidence and public trust, noting that the facility was the first of its kind in UBTH.

“As a tertiary healthcare institution operating round the clock, UBTH serves a large population. A secure environment is therefore critical to effective emergency response, uninterrupted clinical services, staff confidence and public trust,” she said.

According to her, the police post is purpose-built, comprehensively furnished and powered by a dedicated solar installation to ensure uninterrupted operations.

She added that it is equipped with air-conditioning systems, refrigeration units and other infrastructure required for effective policing and rapid response.

The CMD reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in maintaining peace and order, noting that a secure hospital environment directly supports clinical excellence.

In his remarks, CP Agbonika commended the UBTH management for the initiative, describing the police post as a significant boost to the security architecture of the hospital and its environs.

He assured of the police command’s commitment to maintaining law and order within the UBTH and University of Benin community.

The commissioning was witnessed by dignitaries, including principal officers of UBTH, representatives of the Edo State Police Command, community leaders and staff of the hospital.

Other dignitaries at the event included the Chairperson of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) in Edo State, Mrs. Helen Agbonika; Edo State Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Hon. Festus Ebea; the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Felix Akhabue; the Area Commander, Ekiadolor, ACP Umar Garba; the Divisional Police Officer, Ugbowo Police Station, CSP Kolawole Aremu; and President of Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide, Mr. Iyamu Osaro, among others.

The event ended with a tour of the facility, with guests expressing satisfaction with the quality of the structure and equipment provided.
