…an impact-driven session with Kate Okunrobo Odianese
In contemporary society, it is widely accepted that a child’s journey towards a future of purpose, leadership and fulfilment begins with a sound mindset and healthy emotional development. Such growth, however, does not occur in isolation. It requires the deliberate and sustained involvement of parents, guardians, caregivers and other critical stakeholders within the child-care system.
This shared responsibility calls for an unwavering commitment to nurturing love, warmth and emotional security, ensuring that every child develops a genuine sense of belonging within a supportive community.
The founder of God’s Grace Orphanage and Motherless Babies Home, Mrs. Kate Okunrobo Odianese, underscored this reality during a recent knowledge-sharing session with members of the media. She stressed that the emotional well-being of orphans and vulnerable children, as well as the environment in which they are raised, plays a decisive role in shaping their identity, confidence and sense of social belonging.
Okunrobo, who established the foundation in October 2022 along Sapele Road, Benin City, explained that the initiative was driven by a clear vision to nurture leadership potential in every underprivileged child under its care.
“The orphanage was envisioned as a place where hope is restored, opportunities are revealed, and children are empowered to grow into the men and women God has designed them to be,” she said.
Reflecting on the significance of comprehensive care, Okunrobo cited the words of former United States President, John F. Kennedy: “Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.” She noted that the quote highlights the urgency of providing not only quality physical care, but also strong psychosocial support for vulnerable children.
Drawing from practical experience at God’s Grace Orphanage, Okunrobo observed that orphans and underprivileged children develop self-identity and self-awareness at varying stages. This process, she noted, is strongly influenced by the consistency of care, emotional warmth and stability provided within the home. She added that much of the progress recorded at the orphanage is attributable to the selfless contributions of partners and supporters who remain committed to mentoring and nurturing the children.
The impact of these efforts has continued into 2025, with notable academic and personal achievements. According to Okunrobo, two children recently graduated from Senior Secondary School and successfully passed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examination in a single sitting. One of them has since secured admission into the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin City. Beyond academics, several children have also excelled in craft and skill-acquisition programmes—initiatives that have significantly boosted their confidence, creativity and self-esteem.
As the generosity and commitment of compassionate partners continue to transform the lives of underprivileged children—within Edo State, across Nigeria and beyond—God’s Grace Orphanage and Motherless Babies Home remains resolute in its mission. The goal, Okunrobo affirmed, is to ensure that every child grows up surrounded by love, dignity and confidence, free from a sense of disadvantage and equipped with a firm belief in a hopeful and promising future.
