OSOGBO: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State says it has secured the conviction of nine persons arrested for vote buying.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr Mutiu Agboke, disclosed this on Monday during a radio programme in Osogbo.
Agboke said the commission was intensifying efforts to ensure free, fair and credible elections ahead of the Osun governorship poll later in the year.
He called on political parties to comply strictly with INEC guidelines, warning against actions capable of undermining the electoral process.
On the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), Agboke said INEC had upgraded its machines to prevent double or multiple registrations, adding that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted.
He urged the media to help curb misinformation by verifying information with the commission before publication.
Agboke also disclosed that journalists in the state had been added to a WhatsApp platform managed by the commission’s spokesperson to improve access to verified information, warning that legal action would be taken against defamatory or false reports.
