The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and deliberately sensational.
In a press statement issued on Monday, by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, the Army said the report, published by Sahara Reporters, was based on anonymous and unverifiable claims circulated through non-official channels and did not reflect the realities within the force.
According to the Army, there has been no threat of mutiny at any time, stressing that mutiny is a grave offence under military law and contrary to the discipline, professionalism and ethos of Nigerian Army personnel. It reaffirmed the loyalty of officers and soldiers to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The statement noted that grievances within the military are addressed through established internal procedures, rather than public platforms, and cautioned against narratives capable of undermining public confidence and national security.
Clarifying issues around remuneration, the Army explained that promotion increments represent only one component of military pay. Total earnings, it said, include consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational allowances, as well as field, hardship and other entitlements that vary depending on deployment, qualifications and responsibilities.
The Army further stated that, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government authorities, it continues to implement structured welfare reforms. These include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical care and insurance packages for troops and their families. Issues related to allowances, it added, are under continuous review within approved government frameworks.
It also disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff, since assuming office, has initiated engagements with appropriate authorities on troop welfare, noting that the discussions are already yielding positive outcomes.
The statement underscored that the Federal Government, under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has remained committed to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, particularly amid evolving security challenges.
Reaffirming its position, the Nigerian Army described itself as a cohesive, disciplined and professional force focused on defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations, warning that attempts to portray the institution as unstable are irresponsible and detrimental to national security.
The public was urged to disregard unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information on the Armed Forces.
