LAGOS: The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has produced 272 first class graduates as it awarded degrees to thousands of students during its ongoing 56th convocation ceremonies, with the Faculty of Engineering accounting for 89 first class honours.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, disclosed on Wednesday that UNILAG would confer degrees on a total of 16,506 students across all faculties during the convocation, which began earlier in the week.
She said 2,097 students graduated from the Faculties of Engineering, Law and Management Sciences alone. Of the 613 engineering graduates, 89 earned first class honours, while the Faculty of Law produced 321 graduates, including three first class degree holders. In the Faculty of Management Sciences, 1,163 students graduated, with 180 attaining first class honours.
Overall, Ogunsola said the graduating class comprised 272 first class graduates, 1,108 second class upper, 580 second class lower, 131 third class and six pass degree holders.
The vice-chancellor also announced that the university would confer honorary doctorate degrees on two eminent Nigerians: Mr Jubril Tinubu, who will receive a Doctor of Business degree, and Mr Kanu Agabi, former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of the Federation, who will be awarded a Doctor of Law degree.
Ogunsola reaffirmed UNILAG’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation and the provision of a conducive environment for teaching and learning, while thanking staff, alumni and stakeholders for their continued support of the institution.
