ABEOKUTA: The Nigerian Army on Sunday commenced the 2026 Lieutenant-to-Captain practical promotion examination in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with 364 officers participating.

Addressing the candidates at the June 12 Cultural Centre, the Examination President, Maj.-Gen. Peter Malla, congratulated the officers and described the exercise as a critical milestone in their military careers.

Malla said the examination offered candidates an opportunity to lay a solid foundation for career progression, stressing that success in the Army went beyond academic knowledge to include discipline, courage, dedication and adherence to core values.

“Your performance in this examination will define your progress in the Nigerian Army. I urge you to accord it the seriousness and determination it deserves,” he said, assuring candidates of fairness in the conduct of the exercise.

He explained that the examination covered key military competencies such as tactics and low-intensity conflict, map reading, communication, skill at arms and physical fitness, adding that it was designed to reflect real-life operational challenges, including counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency and peace support operations.

Malla warned that any form of examination malpractice would attract immediate disqualification, in line with the Nigerian Army Charter for Promotion Examinations.

Also speaking, the General Officer Commanding, 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Adebayo Babalola, said the promotion examination went beyond academics, noting that candidates would be assessed on their ability to translate knowledge into effective action in real operational environments.
