When a revered general overseer of a Pentecostal church recently prophesied that 2027 would be a year of surprises, some Nigerians may have wondered what kind of surprises the cleric was referring to, considering that unexpected political developments are not uncommon in the country.
In his characteristic manner, not known for verbosity, the cleric simply said surprises await those dreaming of unsettling a sitting president who, according to him, is working hard to deliver the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.
The man of God appeared to be referring to certain strange political bedfellows—retired politicians now ganging up within a political platform.
These are individuals who have occupied one position or another in the past but, in the view of many observers, were unable to do anything meaningful for those who voted them into office.
Instead, they presided over periods when life became increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens.
According to the cleric, such politicians may ultimately find themselves dumbfounded and surprised by the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
For clarity, the word “surprise” has several synonyms, including shock, revelation, bolt from the blue, bombshell, blow and astonishment.
Nevertheless, surprise can be a two-edged sword. The administration of President Bola Tinubu, man who once endured political persecution and exile for his role in the struggle to ensure democracy thrives in Nigeria appears determined not to disappoint Nigerians.
After a careful reflection on the prediction concerning 2027, Nigerians should remain wary of such strange political alliances. Many of these politicians, critics say, are often more interested in what they stand to gain personally, while the welfare of the people takes a back seat.
The country has weathered many storms in the past, yet Nigeria continues to endure. The challenge, many believe, has largely been the absence of genuine leadership at critical moments.
However, faith remains strong among many citizens that the nation can overcome its challenges. There are indications that there could indeed be light at the end of the tunnel if Nigerians rise to do what they believe is right by allowing President Tinubu to consolidate on the initiatives he has begun across the country.
Today, with the growing army of supporters within the Renewed Hope Partners (RHP) and other pro-government support groups across the country, it is evident that a segment of Nigerians appreciates the efforts of the administration so far.
In Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo has also been widely commended by supporters for what they describe as practical governance, with projects and policies that are gradually transforming the state into a construction hub and an attractive destination for investors.
Many residents say the Project SHINE agenda of Governor Okpebholo is already making a noticeable impact on the people, and they also acknowledge the support of President Tinubu for the state government.
Governor Okpebholo has equally demonstrated respect for political leaders, traditional institutions and the people in general, with what many observers describe as a humble and inclusive leadership style.
When the mantle of leadership fell on the shoulders of President Tinubu and Governor Okpebholo, they assured Nigerians that things would improve with time.
Judging from the governor’s performance in less than one year and six months in office, as well as the policies and programmes being implemented by President Tinubu across the country, many supporters believe the nation is being led by individuals prepared for the responsibilities of governance.
