BENIN CITY — The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the welfare and inclusion of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), with a focus on strengthening advocacy and support systems.
Chairman of the Edo State Disability Commission, Hon. Theophilus Egbodion, made this known while receiving members of the Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities of Nigeria (AIDDN), Edo State chapter, during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s office in Benin City.
Egbodion said the Commission was established after years of advocacy to ensure that persons with disabilities in the state are given a voice and greater visibility in governance and development.
He noted that the agency would continue to champion policies and programmes that protect their rights and improve their living conditions, while appreciating Governor Monday Okpebholo for setting up the Commission.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, AIDDN State Chairman, Ambassador Onome Emmanuel Otueroro, said the visit was to congratulate the Commission’s leadership and introduce the intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) cluster, which he described as one of the most neglected within the PWD community.
He said the association also sought collaboration with the Commission to promote inclusive policies, accessible services and sustainable interventions for children and adults living with IDD in Edo State.
Otueroro noted that persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities often face stigma, discrimination and limited opportunities, stressing that with adequate support, they can contribute meaningfully to society.
He called for stronger government and stakeholder partnerships to expand programmes and improve the lives of affected individuals and their families.
