BENIN CITY: The Edo State Government has moved to strengthen cultural and development ties with Germany as the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hon. Chris Okaeben, received the Consul-General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Daniel Krull in Benin City.
Welcoming the envoy, Okaeben praised Germany’s sustained cultural diplomacy with Edo, noting that the state’s rich heritage in arts, music and festivals has continued to attract international interest and foster mutually beneficial partnerships.
He highlighted efforts by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration to resolve outstanding issues surrounding the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA), and commended the German government and other donors for supporting the Archaeological Pavilion project.
The commissioner expressed optimism that stronger cultural collaboration would unlock fresh development opportunities, particularly for young people in the creative industry.
He also briefed the Consul-General on the forthcoming ‘Edo at 35’ celebrations and the Edo Festival (EDOFEST), extending an invitation to the German government to participate.
Okaeben called for expanded partnership in youth training and skills development in film production, bronze and metal works, fine arts, woodwork and vocational exchange programmes, acknowledging previous support from German development agency GIZ in film production initiatives.
Earlier, Krull said he was in Edo State to formally introduce himself to the government and people following his assumption of office last year.
He described Benin City as a historic centre of art and culture, noting that its rich heritage makes it a fitting location for MOWAA’s Archaeological Pavilion.
The Consul-General reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to strengthening cultural relations and supporting Nigeria’s creative and economic development.
Other officials present at the meeting included the Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Iryn Omorgiuwa; and the Director of Entertainment and Creative Economy, Mr. Harrison Ehizoba.
