…Harps on accountability, revenue optimisation, support for government developmental plans
The Executive Chairman, Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), Mr. John Osirenimhe Odior (FCA, ACTI), has directed scratch card vendors and revenue collectors within the haulage sector to optimize on collection and comply with the terms of their engagement or risk job termination.
The directive was issued to stakeholders in the haulage, agricultural, and produce collection sectors during a meeting held at the EIRS headquarters within the Sunny Okundia Training School in Benin City.
Expressing appreciation to the vendors and collectors, Mr. Odior however stated that the Revenue Service had observed irregularities in beats placements, a situation he promised to review to ensure a more equitable and fair process. He condemned the non-compliance regarding official processes and procedures at various collection points.
He emphasized that tax was a vital source of revenue for the state’s development, noting that the success of Senator Monday Okpebholo’s administration will be measured by its ability to deliver on promises through available resources.
The EIRS Chairman stated, ”For the Governor to be returned after four years, he will be judged by his performance, and he needs revenue to perform. If you love and support this government, you must collect the levies with civility, diligently and also pay your own taxes. If we are to work together, you must be transparent; let us be open with one another.”
Mr. Odior stated that the Revenue Service is positioned to conduct businesses in a way that benefits all Edo citizens. He pledged the Service’s support to vendors through simplified tax processes, enlightenment programs, enforcement activities, and awards for the best-performing collectors.
In conclusion he urged stakeholders, particularly, Directors of Limited Liability Companies and business owners to file their individual annual tax returns before the March 31st deadline.
“Today, we can see that your tax is working because Governor Okpebholo is working; therefore, pay your tax,” he reiterated.
Also speaking at the event, the Executive Director of MDA Services, Hon. Engr. Jackson Eribo, ACTI, expressed concern over the below-target performance of the scratch card vendors. Describing the situation as worrisome. He noted that it affects the overall objectives of the Service and recommended strict disciplinary measures to address the shortfall.
In their separate responses, the revenue collectors and vendors highlighted the challenges faced on the field but collectively pledged to meet their targets moving forward.
