BENIN CITY: The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) has moved to strengthen the security of revenue collection through a strategic partnership with the Department of State Services (DSS).
Speaking after a closed-door meeting with DSS leadership in Benin City, the Executive Chairman of EIRS, Mr John Osarenkhoe Odior, said the engagement was aimed at eliminating security threats capable of undermining revenue generation in the state.
Accompanied by senior management staff, Odior explained that the collaboration would centre on intelligence sharing, operational support and coordinated strategies to safeguard revenue processes.
“The essence of this visit is to identify areas of collaboration and support that will enable us to drive revenue growth without security challenges,” he said.
He commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for ongoing infrastructural development across the state, stressing that the EIRS remained committed to complementing government efforts through improved revenue performance.
Outlining his vision for the agency, Odior said priority would be placed on tax awareness, public education and citizen engagement to boost compliance.
He assured taxpayers that concerns over double taxation had been addressed through ongoing reforms and restructuring, noting that the current framework marks a significant departure from previous practices.
“We are not focused on setting arbitrary tax targets; the results will speak for themselves and will be verifiable,” he stated.
Odior urged residents to familiarise themselves with the new tax laws and reforms in order to better understand their rights and obligations.
“We need to take time to study the tax system and be fully aware of our responsibilities as citizens,” he added.
