IRRUA: The Josemaria Escriva Foundation (JOSEF), with support from the TY Danjuma Foundation, has commenced a training programme for primary school teachers in Esan West and Esan Central Local Government Areas of Edo State aimed at strengthening teaching capacity and improving education standards.
The 2026 training programme was formally flagged off at Akho Primary School in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area.
Chief Responsibility Officer of the Josemaria Escriva Foundation, Dr Jude Obasanmi, disclosed that the project targets 300 teachers as well as 10 Learning and Development Officers/Master Trainers (LDOs/MTs).
Obasanmi explained that each year, 60 teachers and 10 LDOs drawn from 20 public primary schools would participate in the programme.
He noted that the initiative focuses on improving classroom effectiveness, equipping teachers with stress and time management skills and promoting healthy mental health practices.
According to him, the Teachers for Effective Service Delivery Project (TSEP) will run from 2023 to 2027.
He added that by 2025, a total of 180 teachers had already benefited from the programme.
“After each training session, participating teachers are expected to cascade the knowledge gained to other teachers in their respective schools,” Obasanmi said.
In her remarks, Ms Tomi Ajayi, State Officer of the TY Danjuma Foundation, described the organisation as a private philanthropic body committed to improving the quality of life of Nigerians through support for education, community health and income generation initiatives.
Ajayi emphasised that strengthening teachers was central to building a resilient and effective education system.
She added that the training programme was designed not only to enhance teachers’ professional performance but also to improve their overall well-being.
“In Edo State, we are proud of our partnership with the Josémaria Escriva Foundation, which has delivered impactful programmes since 2018,” she said.
She listed some of the initiatives to include girl-child retention projects, the Teachers for Effective Service Delivery programme that trained over 100 teachers and the Learn-at-Home initiative which supported more than 1,200 pupils during the COVID-19 lockdown.
