The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false a graphic circulating online which claims that the Commission has set March 26 as the deadline for government officials seeking elective positions to resign from office.
In a public notice made available on the Commission’s X official handle, the electoral body stated that the information did not originate from INEC and described the graphic as fake and misleading.
The Commission clarified that it has not issued any announcement fixing March 26 or any date as a resignation deadline for public office holders intending to contest elections.
INEC therefore urged members of the public, media organisations, and political stakeholders to disregard the message entirely and refrain from spreading unverified election-related information.
According to the Commission, all official announcements and updates concerning electoral matters are communicated only through its verified channels. These include the official INEC website, verified social media platforms, and formal press releases issued by the Commission.
The electoral body also encouraged citizens to verify sensitive electoral information through official sources before sharing it, warning that the circulation of false information could mislead the public and create unnecessary confusion.
INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency, accuracy, and timely dissemination of information as preparations continue for upcoming electoral activities in the country.
