Lagos: A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr Usman Sule, has called for stronger support, deliberate policies, and systemic changes to advance women in the legal profession and across all sectors of society.
Sule made the call on Sunday in his goodwill message, while joining the global community to celebrate women on the Interbational Women’s Day (IWD)
The senior lawyer commended the resilience, excellence and growing influence of women in the legal profession and other sectors, describing them as indispensable pillars of justice, development and social progress.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that IWD, observed annually on March 8, celebrates women’s achievements while advocating gender equality and the protection of women’s rights worldwide.
Sule urged governments, institutions and professional bodies to intensify efforts toward empowering women and ensuring equal opportunities for them to thrive.
According to him, the contributions of women are critical to building a more inclusive and prosperous society.
The learned silk said that female lawyers in Nigeria and across the world have continued to distinguish themselves through dedication, integrity and professional competence.
He said their achievements were particularly remarkable given the challenges often associated with balancing career demands and societal expectations.
“The legal profession has witnessed outstanding contributions from women who continue to break barriers and inspire younger generations to pursue careers in law.
“On this special day, I celebrate the courage, strength and achievements of women everywhere.
“I particularly commend female lawyers who continue to uphold the principles of justice, fairness and the rule of law in our courts and institutions,” Sule said.
He added that the increasing presence of women in leadership positions within the legal profession, the judiciary and corporate organisations demonstrates steady progress toward gender equality.
Sule also paid tribute to women making significant impacts beyond the legal profession, including those in sports, governance, business and humanitarian services.
He acknowledged the growing role of women in international sports administration and development, highlighting efforts within organisations such as FIFA to promote women’s participation and leadership in global football.
The senior lawyer stressed that celebrating women should go beyond annual events, urging sustained commitment to policies that empower women, protect their rights and promote equal opportunities.
“I also want to encourage young women to remain focused and determined in pursuing their goals because perseverance and excellence remain key to overcoming systemic barriers,” Sule said.
