UYO: The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom Council, has called for increased funding and upgrade of infrastructure in Federal Government-owned media organs across the country.
The Chairman, Mr Nsibiet John, made the call in Uyo on Wednesday at the 15th Anniversary celebration of Atlantic Radio, 104.5 FM, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.
John expressed worry at the state of infrastructure in many Federal Government-owned media organisations around the country.
The NUJ chairman said that the situation had undermined quality journalism, and limited the organisation’s capacity to deliver.
He called for improved funding, and provision of modern media equipment to ensure quality service delivery, and human capital development.
“Media organs, especially radio stations operate for extended hours daily, they deserve adequate financial support and modern equipment to meet competition.
“Without deliberate investment in infrastructure and personnel, government-owned stations will continue to struggle to meet contemporary broadcasting standards,” he said.
John congratulated the management and staff of Atlantic 104.5 FM on the milestone, describing the anniversary as a testament to consistency and professionalism.
In his remarks, Atlantic Radio Zonal Director, South South Zone, Mr Fred Braimah, commended the workforce for their resilience and professionalism.
Braimah stated that the station would remain faithful to its mandate of informing, educating and entertaining the public.
He said that the station had played significant roles in promoting peace and unity in the South South Region.
He said that the future of Atlantic FM was pegged in innovation, digital transformation, content excellence and ethical broadcasting.
The theme of the Anniversary is: “Fulfilling Promises through Impactful Broadcasting”
