BENIN CITY: The Edo State Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Washington Osifo, has officially resigned from his post under Governor Monday Okpebholo, citing his ambition to contest the House of Representatives seat for Uhunwmonde/Orhionmwon Federal Constituency.

Osifo told journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, that his resignation was in full compliance with the electoral law, which mandates that all political appointees intending to run for elective office must step down at least 30 days before party primaries.

“In obedience to the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, specifically the Electoral Act, and in response to the call of my people, I tendered my resignation,” Osifo said.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently revised the electoral timetable, setting primaries between April 22 and May 20. By law, it is required that holders of appointed offices resign 30 days before the primaries. Today, I am complying with that requirement.”

The former commissioner emphasised that resigning ahead of time would allow him to engage meaningfully with his constituents rather than leaving mobilisation to the last minute.

Osifo also reflected on his tenure as commissioner, describing it as fulfilling but no longer challenging.

“This is my third time serving as a commissioner. The position is substantial, but when one continues in a role for too long, the essence of living diminishes.

There are no new challenges left for me at this level. I want to go to a place where I must crack my brain, confront new challenges, and provide answers that leave a mark. This is where I seek to serve my people.”

The NUJ Edo State chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, commended Osifo for aiming higher in his political career and urged journalists to verify their reports as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections.

In line with his political ambitions, Osifo announced the appointment of Evang. Tony Osazuwa, as Director General of his campaign organisation for the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency.
