BENIN CITY — The Edo State Government has renewed its commitment to ending stigma and advancing inclusive policies for persons living with autism, as it joined the global community to mark World Autism Awareness Day 2026 on Thursday.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the state underscored the need for greater awareness, understanding, and protection of the rights of individuals on the autism spectrum, describing the condition as a lifelong developmental disorder that affects communication, interaction, and perception.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugenia Abdallah, stressed that every individual living with autism deserves dignity, equal opportunities, and the support required to lead a fulfilling life.
She called for the building of a more inclusive society where persons with autism are neither stigmatised nor marginalised but embraced and empowered, urging families, educators, caregivers, and the wider public to demonstrate patience, compassion, and understanding.
Abdallah also commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his continued commitment to the welfare and protection of vulnerable groups in the state.
She further lauded Edesili Okpebholo Anani for her sustained advocacy and initiatives targeted at improving the lives of women, children, and persons with special needs.
Reaffirming the ministry’s resolve, the commissioner said efforts would be intensified to promote early diagnosis, improve access to quality education and healthcare services, and strengthen social inclusion for persons with autism.
She urged stakeholders across sectors to scale up awareness campaigns, eliminate discrimination, and create enabling environments that allow individuals with autism to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
The ministry also called on residents of Edo State to embrace diversity and support ongoing efforts to build a more compassionate and inclusive society, noting that every individual, regardless of condition, possesses unique abilities and valuable contributions.
