Abuja: The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged Nigerian leaders to embrace sacrificial governance in line with the spirit of Easter.

The NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, made the call in an Easter message issued on Saturday in Abuja, felicitating Nigerian workers and citizens on the occasion.

Ajaero said the season symbolised sacrifice, love and redemption, noting that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ reflected selfless service for the good of humanity.

According to him, governance should not be driven by personal gain but by commitment to the welfare of the people.

“The sacrifice of Christ was for the redemption of mankind, not personal benefit. Leaders must therefore see governance as a platform for service, not accumulation of wealth,” he said.

The NLC president said Nigerian workers were bearing undue burdens, including rising transportation costs, poor electricity supply and insecurity.

He described the high cost of transportation as a major strain on workers’ income, adding that the persistent power crisis had crippled businesses and worsened living conditions.

Ajaero also decried what he described as the suppression of workers’ rights and the imposition of harsh economic policies, stressing that such actions undermined democratic principles.

He called on governments at all levels to implement people-oriented policies that would address poverty, unemployment and infrastructure deficits.

“We urge leaders to prioritise the welfare of citizens, ensure security of lives and property, and create an enabling environment for economic growth,” he said.

Ajaero expressed optimism that Nigerian workers would overcome present challenges through unity and collective action.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the NLC to continue advocating policies that promote social justice and equitable distribution of the nation’s resources.

The NLC president wished Nigerians a peaceful and meaningful Easter celebration and urged them to remain steadfast in the pursuit of justice and national development.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
