Emmanuel Fernandez has wasted little time endearing himself to Nigerian fans after announcing his arrival with a goal on his first start for the Super Eagles.

The Rangers centre-back found the net in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Jordan on Tuesday at the Mardan Sports Complex in Antalya, delivering a composed performance that has already sparked widespread praise and comparisons to established stars like Calvin Bassey.

Fernandez admitted he was initially surprised by his invitation to the national team.

“When I first got the call to come and play for Nigeria, I was a bit shocked that the national team wanted me,” he told the Nigeria Football Federation’s media team.

That disbelief quickly gave way to impact. Making his first full start, the defender scored in the 41st minute after connecting with a cross from Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Positioned at the back post, Fernandez controlled the ball calmly, shifted onto his left foot, and slotted past Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila with the poise of a seasoned forward.

Beyond the goal, his overall display stood out. Fernandez played the entire 90 minutes, maintaining discipline and composure even as the match grew increasingly physical in the second half.

When Jordan equalised in the 77th minute and the tempo became frantic, the young defender remained steady at the heart of Nigeria’s defence.

His growing reputation is backed by valuable European experience.
Since joining Rangers from Peterborough United in the summer of 2025, Fernandez has tested himself against top opposition in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. He has scored six goals for the Scottish side this season, underlining his threat in attacking situations.

Rangers supporters were quick to celebrate his Super Eagles breakthrough, with fan platform Heart and Hand posting a simple but telling reaction: “There he is.”

Nigerian fans, however, had much more to say.
Many praised his leadership and confidence, noting how he was seen organising teammates despite being new to the squad. Others pointed to his potential, suggesting he could develop into a key figure with further refinement, much like Bassey did.
Some supporters even expressed excitement about a possible partnership between both defenders at the heart of Nigeria’s backline, while others went further, hailing his presence and influence as that of a future team leader.

Fernandez’s composure on the ball may stem from his past, having previously played as a midfielder before transitioning into a central defensive role. That background was evident in his comfort in possession and his instinct to read attacking situations.
It also explained his goal. Rather than waiting for the play to come to him, he anticipated the moment, found space, and executed with precision.

With two appearances, one goal, and a commanding full debut, Fernandez has already made a strong impression. For many Nigerian fans, the verdict is forming quickly — this is a player ready to stay.
