… Commission E-Library, flags off fitness centre and health facility
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved a N2 billion grant for Edo State University, Iyamho, in Etsako West Local Government Area, to support infrastructural development.
The governor also increased the institution’s monthly subvention from N100 million to N250 million as part of efforts to strengthen its capacity and improve learning conditions.
Okpebholo made the announcement on Monday during the commissioning of the Ehi Aganmonmen Business Administration E-Library and the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Peter Omoh Dunia Fitness Centre and the Edo State University Health Centre.
Speaking at the event, the governor described the occasion as a defining moment for the institution and a reflection of his administration’s commitment to repositioning the education sector in Edo State.
“Today is a great day for Edo State University, Iyamho. Since assuming office, our administration has remained committed to repositioning the education sector in Edo State. The Ehi Aganmonmen Business Administration E-Library, the Peter Omoh Dunia Fitness Centre and the Edo State University Health Centre are clear symbols of progress, partnership and shared responsibility in advancing education and health in Edo State,” he said.
The governor paid tribute to Chief Ehi Aganmonmen for donating computers and furniture for the E-Library, noting that the gesture would enhance digital learning and academic excellence in the institution.
He also commended Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia for supporting the development of the fitness centre, describing it as a strategic investment in student health and wellbeing.
Okpebholo further acknowledged the contributions of other stakeholders, including a parent who volunteered to sponsor the architectural designs for the projects, as well as the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adetimirin, who donated one month’s salary in support of the development efforts.
Moved by the sacrifices, the governor announced the N2 billion grant to the university.
He stressed that such acts of generosity underscored the need for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector in the development of public institutions.
“These acts of generosity remind us that government alone cannot do everything. We call on other corporate organisations and well-meaning individuals to emulate these noble gestures and partner with government in building a stronger Edo State,” he said.
On healthcare infrastructure, the governor expressed support for the university’s plan to replace its existing sick bay with a new health centre, describing it as a major step toward improving healthcare services for the university community.
He also charged students and management of the institution to make proper use of the facilities and ensure their maintenance and sustainability.
“To our students, these facilities are for your growth — use them well. To the university management, I charge you to ensure proper maintenance and sustainability of these facilities. We are investing in your future, and we expect you to guard that investment with discipline and purpose,” he said.
The governor said the projects aligned with his administration’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritises education, health and infrastructure as critical drivers of sustainable development in Edo State.
Okpebholo also commissioned several projects at Auchi Polytechnic, including an ICT hall, administrative blocks and a sporting arena, all sponsored by Peter Omoh Dunia.
The event was attended by Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, who is the founding visitor to the institution; Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Musa Ikhilor; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Yakubu Musa; former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu; and other senior government officials.
