World Athletics has officially unveiled the qualification system and entry standards for the 2027 World Athletics Championships, set to take place from September 11 to 19, 2027, at the iconic National Stadium in Beijing.
This marks the second time Beijing will host the event, following the successful 2015 edition.

It shifts the qualification balance to approximately 40% through entry standards and 60% via world rankings, moving away from the previous 50-50 split to better reward consistent performers throughout the qualification period.
Key highlights of the entry standards include:
Men’s 100m: 9.95 seconds
Men’s 800m: 1:43.00
Other events feature similarly ambitious targets across sprints, middle distance, distance, hurdles, jumps, throws, and combined events.
Qualification windows are open now and will run through early August 2027, with performances counting from top-tier competitions worldwide.
Winning major titles, including from the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship, and top marathon or race walk events.
Continental and international tour performances.
For relay events, qualification pathways were already partially determined through the 2026 World Relays in Gaborone.

World Athletics officials stated that the updated principles, proposed with input from the Athletes’ Commission, aim to maintain high competitive standards while providing more opportunities through the global calendar of Continental Tour meetings.679519
“These standards reflect the incredible progress in our sport,” a World Athletics spokesperson noted.
“We want the best athletes in Beijing, but we also want a system that rewards those who perform consistently at the highest level over the full qualification cycle.”
The 2027 Championships will feature 49 events and are expected to draw top stars from around the world back to the venue that hosted the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2015 World Championships.
