As Nigeria Women Premier Football League Champions Edo Queens step up their preparations for the forthcoming West Africa Football Union WAFU-B play off, scheduled to hold later this month in Burkina Faso, Edo State Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, gingered up the players’ spirit as he paid them a surprise visit in camp and joined them in their evening training session.
The sports loving Deputy Governor who visited the reigning champions in the company of Edo State Sports Commission Chairman Hon Amadin Desmond Enabulele gave the girls the pleasant surprise with his esteemed presence as part of motivation in addition to unnounced financial support to boost their morales ahead of the CSF engagement.
Idahosa who scored twice during the Tuesday evening training with the former WAFU-B champions was visibly excited to be with the champions as some fans around hailed him for his uncommon humility.
Addressing the players at the end of the evening session, the Deputy Governor commended the players for making Edo State proud during the league ending Super six tournament in Portharcourt where they showcased their talents and determination, coming from behind to lift the league title for the second time in three seasons.
He reassured the team that the Governor will soon host and reward them for their excellent outing, making Edo State proud.
“I’m here today to appreciate and encourage you to remain committed and disciplined as you prepare for continental tournament where you will be representing Edo people again. We are proud of you girls for emerging champions of the NWFL premiership.
“I tasked myself that I must spare time today to train with you people in this concentration camp, and I want to say that you have been fantastic and I want you to keep the flag flying.So I want to thank you for what you are doing, it shows that you are committed in what you do.”
“Today I also want to assure you that the promises of Edo State government led by His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, is still intact, you are aware that he travelled out of the country on official engagement in London and just returned. I am sure in no distance time he will invite you to the government house where you will be highly rewarded and appreciated. And on behalf of the State government I appreciate you greatly.”
Responding on behalf of the team,the captain Deborah Odiagbe, expressed appreciation to the Deputy Governor, saying that it was a great honour for them to have the second citizen of the state in their midst.
” Honestly, it is a great honour to have you here sir, we are very happy with your support. For you to show your presence in this camp means a lot to us. I remembered vividly well that coach Moses Aduku and myself came to your office and you told us that third is not an option, that we should go and win the league. So we came back went to drawing board, planned well and won the league for 2025/26 season.”
” In 2024 we won the league for the first time and went to WAFU- B and conquered. So, we are going again for the same competition, so I want to promise you that we are not only going to participate, but to win WAFU-B again and then move on to CAF Women’s Champions League proper and make Edo State and Nigeria proud again.k”
