The Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) has fixed November 16 to 20, 2027, for the Nigeria Open Golf Tournament, heralding the comeback of the nation’s biggest golf championship after 20 years.
NGF President, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, made the announcement while unveiling plans to reposition and elevate the standard of golf in the country.
Runsewe said the federation is delighted to stage a befitting Nigeria Open, the country’s premier golf event, after two decades of inactivity.
The Nigeria Open was one of Africa’s most prestigious golf tournaments, held annually from 1969 to 1999, mostly at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos.
Its last three editions, between 1997 and 1999, were hosted at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
According to Runsewe, the long break was necessary to allow the federation to rebrand and put structures in place that meet global best practices.
He disclosed that the rebranding drive includes a new website, revamped social media presence, insurance cover for golfers and the introduction of the World Handicap System (WHS) index.
The NGF boss explained that the WHS initiative will unify all golf clubs in the country under one recognised handicap system.
He described the move as part of a broader strategy to internationalise Nigerian golf and restore its place on the world map.
