Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has admitted that Kenya will not be able to win the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite their status as one of the tournament’s co-hosts.
Kenya, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, is set to host the 2027 continental showpiece, which will guarantee the Harambee Stars a place in the tournament. ‎ ‎
However, McCarthy believes Kenya still have a significant gap to bridge before they can compete for the AFCON title against Africa’s established football powerhouses. ‎
The former South Africa international striker acknowledged the ambition surrounding the national team but insisted that winning the continental championship would be beyond Kenya’s current level. ‎
‎“Kenya cannot win AFCON even if you give me millions of dollars,” McCarthy was quoted as saying. ‎ ‎The coach’s remarks underline the scale of the challenge facing Kenya as they prepare for a home AFCON campaign in 2027
