A 40-year-old man, Samson Ekata, has allegedly murdered his eight-month-pregnant girlfriend in Uromi, Edo State, claiming that voices instructed him to kill her.

The suspect reportedly mutilated the woman’s body and attempted to remove her unborn baby in the horrific incident in Uromi, the headquarters of Esan North-East Local Government Area.

Samson Ekata who is currently in police custody, made the claim while responding to questions from journalists during the parade of criminal suspects by the Edo State Police Command in Benin City on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

Recounting the incident, the suspect claimed that he had never killed anyone before. He also confirmed that the deceased, aged 18, was his girlfriend and had been living with him for about a year.

Samson Ekata said he initially resisted the voices because his girlfriend was pregnant.

He explained the instruction returned in a dream about two weeks later, after which he carried out the killing.

“What actually happened is that my girlfriend was living with me, after a while a started hearing voices from different places that I should eliminate her. Then, I said this is my woman and she is pregnant, I cannot kill her.

“Then as I was sleeping at night I heard the voice again saying I should kill her, kill her, kill her, that they have already killed her in her family side, then I killed her. I have not killed before”, Samson Ekata said.

The suspect also admitted to severing one of the victim’s breasts, claiming that the same spirit instructed him to do so.

He further disclosed that he transported the woman’s body in a Toyota Corolla and dumped it by the roadside in the area.

Although police reportedly linked him to several murder cases, prompting his description as a suspected serial killer, Ekata denied involvement in any other killing, insisting that this was his first.

Briefing journalists, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Patrick Daaor, described the incident as horrific and expressed sadness over the killing of the pregnant woman.

CP Daaor commended members of the community for cooperating with the police, saying their assistance contributed to the suspect’s arrest.

He assured the public that the suspect would face the full weight of the law.

The police commissioner also advised parents to pay closer attention to their children’s safety, particularly girls, while urging young women to exercise caution in their relationships.
