… seek partnership with NNRA
Worried by deepening harmful physical and radioactive pollution of the region from activities of International Oil Companies, Niger Delta Youths have appealed for partnership with the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) to enforce compliance to meet global standards for safety of workers and the ecosystem and the general public in the region.
National Secretary of Niger Delta Youth Council of Nigeria, Ambassador Patrick Akpanetoh, who made the call a presentation on Public health concern at the Akwa Ibom State operational base of the agency, Thursday, August 30, noted that ionized substances and radioactivity released by oil exploration and other extractive companies, have caused more damage than good to the host communities, hence the need for immediate enforcement of relevant regulatory and statute laws to ensure that global best practice is adopted and applied.
He also appealed that steps be taken by the federal agency to ensure that workers in these departments are adequately protected by necessary safety kits and insurances.
Responding, Head of operations, Mrs. Ememobong Essien appreciated the group for their patriotism and concern about public health and promised that the agency will carry out their routine work and that any company using equipments that emit these harmful substances without meeting the global standard, will have their licences withdrawn, even as she promised to passed their request to the appropriate quarters.
The National Secretary was accompanied by the state chairman of Niger Delta Youth Council of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom Chapter, Itoro Joshua, and a host of others.
