The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday were held to a 0-0 draw by Rwanda in the second match of their AFCON qualifying campaign in Kigali.
Despite multiple scoring opportunities and tactical changes in the second half, Nigeria was unable to break the deadlock, failing to build on their exciting performance against Benin Republic.
The draw comes after Austin Eguavoen’s team triumphed over Benin Republic with a convincing 3-0 victory on Saturday in Uyo, bringing the Super Eagles points tally in the group to four.
First half: Missed chances and yellow cards
From the kickoff, Nigeria showed intent with Ademola Lookman almost breaking through to score the opening goal within the first 15 minutes. Lookman’s early effort, however, was deflected by Rwanda’s goalkeeper, leaving the Super Eagles still searching for an opener.
Shortly after, Victor Boniface unleashed a powerful shot that struck the crossbar, coming agonizingly close to giving Nigeria the lead. This attempt from Boniface, which rattled the top bar of the goalpost, sent a clear signal that Nigeria was determined to find the back of the net.
Despite Nigeria’s dominance in attack, Rwanda’s defense proved tough to crack. In a tense moment during the first half, Lookman received a yellow card for a rough challenge, with two Rwandan players also booked for similar offenses. The first half ended with the scoreboard still reading 0-0, as both teams struggled to find the clinical touch needed to secure a goal.
Second half: Tactical changes, but no breakthrough
The second half began with renewed energy and optimism from the Super Eagles. Coach José Peseiro made several key substitutions to refresh the team’s attack and midfield. Star striker Victor Osimhen was brought on for Boniface, while Moses Simon replaced Samuel Chukwueze on the wings. In the midfield, Frank Onyeka came in for Wilfred Ndidi, and Raphael Onyedika was introduced in place of Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. These tactical changes signaled Nigeria’s intent to take control of the game, and later substituting Lookman for Taiwo Awoniyi
With these fresh legs on the pitch, Nigeria ramped up the pressure, and Osimhen, in particular, was involved in several attacking plays. The Napoli forward, who had been instrumental in Nigeria’s 3-0 win over Benin Republic, was expected to find the back of the net again, but Rwanda’s defense remained compact and disciplined.
Despite all the substitutions and offensive efforts, the Super Eagles could not convert their chances. Moses Simon and Lookman continued to create opportunities from the wings, but their crosses and shots were either off-target or well-defended by Rwanda’s backline. Osimhen also had a few half-chances but could not replicate his clinical form from previous matches.
As the clock wound down, it became clear that Nigeria’s finishing lacked the sharpness necessary to secure a victory. Rwanda’s resilience paid off, and the match concluded without a goal from either side, much to the frustration of the Super Eagles and their supporters.
A missed opportunity after recent success
The 0-0 draw left fans and analysts wondering what went wrong for Nigeria, especially given their dominant 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in their last outing. That match, which saw goals from Osimhen and Lookman had set the expectation for another strong performance. However, despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Nigeria was unable to break Rwanda’s defensive line in this encounter.
While the Super Eagles showed glimpses of their attacking prowess, they will need to find more consistency in converting opportunities into goals as they prepare for future matches. Rwanda’s determined defense should also be credited for their ability to withstand Nigeria’s relentless pressure, leaving both teams to settle for a goalless draw.
