Juventus claimed a hard-fought 2-0 derby win over Torino on Saturday, moving to within a point of the Serie A summit, while AC Milan lost ground in the title race with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Cagliari.
Goals from Timothy Weah and Kenan Yildiz in each half secured Juventus’ victory, lifting them to third place with 24 points. This result, at least temporarily, places Juventus level with Inter Milan in second and just one point behind league leaders Napoli.
With Napoli and Inter facing each other on today, Juventus are guaranteed to close the gap on one of them by weekend’s end. However, they could potentially slip out of the Champions League spots if Atalanta, Fiorentina, or Lazio, who are only two points behind, win their upcoming matches.
Meanwhile, Torino, once top of the table in September, have seen their form decline drastically, with only one win in their last seven league games. They now sit in 11th place, trailing their city rivals by ten points.
Juventus broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when Weah tapped into an open net after Torino’s goalkeeper, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, failed to hold onto Andrea Cambiaso’s cross-shot from the left. In a largely uneventful match, Yildiz sealed the victory with a back-post header six minutes from time, quashing any hopes of a Torino comeback.
AC Milan, however, fell further from title contention, twice surrendering the lead in a gripping 3-3 draw with Cagliari. Despite Rafael Leao scoring twice in the first half to counter Nadir Zortea’s opener, Milan’s defensive struggles continued.
After Gabriele Zappa leveled for Cagliari shortly after the break, Tammy Abraham restored Milan’s lead, only for Zappa to score a brilliant late equalizer.
The result leaves Milan in seventh place, four points off the Champions League spots and seven behind league leaders Napoli.
