The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released its Q2 2024 road transport data, indicating a notable decrease in road crashes. Compared to Q1 2024, road crashes declined by 9.69 percent, from 2,662 to 2,407. This represents an 18.96 percent fall from Q2 2023, which recorded 2,967 crashes.

The data reveals a significant disparity in the sex distribution of persons injured in road traffic crashes with male adults having the highest percentage of 73.22 percent and female adults with 21.10 percent. Male child with 3.08 percent and female child with 2.06 percent with a total frequency of persons injured at 7,650.

Of all the crashes, serious cases stood top in quarter 2 2024 with 1,525 compared to the total and minor cases of 662 and 218 respectively. The three classifications of cases which are fatal, minor, and serious declined in Q2 2024 compared to preceding quarters.

A total of 3,612 vehicles were involved in road traffic crashes in Q2 2024. It was lower compared to the previous quarter which recorded 3,592 indicating a decrease of 8.60 percent. The total numbers of vehicles recorded with traffic rashes for Q2 is 3,612, while commercial vehicles recorded the highest frequency of vehicles involved in road traffic crashes at 2,446 amounting to 67.72 percent, and diplomat vehicles with the lowest frequency at 3 with a percentage of 0.08 percent.

The north central zone recorded the highest number of crashes in Q2 2024 with 869 crashes, followed by the south west with 661 crashes, the south east recorded the least with 119 crashes.

Similarly, the north-central reported the highest numbers of casualties with 3,020, followed by the south west with 2,019, while the south east recorded the least with 452.

This data underscores Nigeria’s progress in improving road safety and reducing crashes.
